OUR CHURCH: Latest NewsThe Second Tuesday event for January 10 will be a video showing and group discussion of The Moving of Sophia Myles (2000) NR. Sophia (Della Reese), the church minister’s wife, struggles to cope with her husband’s untimely decline and death while trying to hold on to both her home and the town she loves. In the mean time, Mary Margaret (Rue McClanahan) pressures her fellow church leaders to commit the church to a controversial real estate deal. 96 min. Second Tuesday is a 10:00 a.m. weekday event of free entertainment and community fellowship scheduled at St. Paul’s Center in the Dining Room on the second Tuesday of each month except August. The event is usually a video presentation, discussion of the contents, and dialogue that encourages reconciliation of related personal and interpersonal difficulties that occur in our daily lives. On February 14 the Second Tuesday event will be a video showing of The Road to Freedom: The Vernon Johns Story, the little known story of one of America’s earliest and most outspoken voices in the struggle for racial equality. New Rector Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Paul’s: On behalf of the Vestry and Search Committee, I am pleased to inform you that after thorough examination and prayerful discernment, the next Rector of St. Paul’s Rock Creek Parish has been called. With the unanimous recommendation of the Search Committee and the unanimous approval of the Vestry and Bishop Chane, we have called the Reverend Allan B. Johnson-Taylor to lead our parish. Allan Johnson (as he prefers to be called) is an evangelist with a nimble intellect, a quick wit and an even temperament. Allan has been a priest for sixteen years. During the past six years he has served with distinction as the Rector of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Forestville, Maryland. He has also been the Rector of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Yeadon, Pennsylvania and served in parishes in Philadelphia, Charlottesville, and Baltimore. Allan and his wife, Donna, have a seven year old son and make their home in Bowie, Maryland. He has degrees from The University of Maryland, Virginia Theological Seminary and Princeton Theological Seminary. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Virginia Theological Seminary, Chair of the Diocesan Board of Examining Chaplains and a member of the Diocesan Commission on Ministry. Allan has a firm commitment to evangelism, youth ministry and neighborhood outreach. He has also had significant experience in addressing such parish issues as financial and physical plant management, operation of a cemetery and five-year strategic planning. At this time I fully expect that Rev. Johnson will join the St. Paul’s family on or about December 1st. I hope that you will welcome him and his family with open hearts and open minds. I have no doubt that you will find him to be as dynamic and engaging as we did in selecting him. Yours faithfully, Jim Jones Sr. Warden
