The Choir of St Paul's comprises eight professional singers, drawn from a wide area of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. They are under the direction of the full-time Director of Music. The Choir sings at the Sunday morning Eucharist at 11.OOam each week from September through July. At present the Choir also sings at the Evensongs which take place on two Sundays each month, apart from the month of July. There are evening Sung Eucharists on a number of festivals through the season. The dates for Evensongs and other special choral services are announced on the website, and are also advertised in the Washington Post. From time to time the choir sings at other churches in the Diocese of Washington, as well as churches of other denominations. The Choir has the joy of singing in a near-perfect acoustic setting at St Paul's; an environment which enhances music of all kinds, and which is in regular demand for performances by visiting musicians. In June, 2004, the fine new mechanical-action organ by Dobson Pipe Organ Builders, Ltd, of Lake City, Iowa, was installed. In due course this will be followed by another, slightly larger organ in the auditorium of the St Paul's Center. To find out more information regarding our new organ, please click here.
The Choir made its first professional CD recording in 2002, on the Lammas label. Lammas is a British company, noted for its major output of fine choral and organ discs. The CD contains a wide range of musical styles, and in this sense it reflects the varied history and cultural diversity of the parish.
Copies of the CD may be purchased through major dealers. They may also be obtained from the church office. The cost is $18.00, plus $2.00 to cover shipping. Address orders to The Director of Music. Checks, with order, payable to ‘St Paul’s Rock Creek Parish’.
Reviews of the CD Recording
The CD has been well received among serious church musicians, clergy, and laity alike. It has received favorable reviews in church music publications including the Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians (US), which cited the four text settings by the conductor, Graham Elliott, as the highlight of the CD, adding that the six spirituals were sung "refreshingly and appropriately to the idiom of the arrangements". The British Organists Review commented that all selections were "well sung and the companiments sympathetic…this disc provided more gentle listening, almost bringing one back to England’s restful calm". The British periodical Choir and Organ, stated "This is a beautiful recording. The tiny choir of just eight voices produces a lovely homogenous tone in carefully chosen repertoire ….the main attraction is the sheer beauty of the sound". The journal Cross Rhythms (UK) cited the choir as having "a definite Anglican flavor" and praised the organ accompaniments as "first rate". The CD also received favorable comment from the Bishop of the Diocese of Washington.
SECOND CD

IN HIS TEMPLE The music of Edward Elgar.
Lammas Records released the latest recording by the choir and organ of St Paul’s, Rock Creek Parish in 2005. It features major choral works by Sir Edward Elgar, as well as a movement of the Organ Sonata in G major. The recording is the second on this label, and the first made in the restored church, and featuring the celebrated Dobson organ, installed in 2004. The choir is directed by Graham Elliott, who also plays the organ solo. The accompanist is Neil Weston. Philip Cave was the producer, and there are photographs by Mauricio Franco.
This recording is unique! It is the first time that our celebrated new organ has been recorded. The project has been made possible by generous sponsorship from the organ builder, Lynn Dobson.
The recording captures the 'atmosphere' of St Paul's, and shows, again, that the acoustic is ideal for this sort of recording.
The new CD - as well as copies of the previous CD, So Come to Him, can be obtained from the Music Office, cost $18, or $20 if mailed. The recording will eventually be on sale in record stores on both sides of the Atlantic, but for the next few months the only stock is at St Paul's.
You can contact: Dr. Graham J. Elliott or Mauricio Franco to obtain copies of the CDs.
