The St Paul’s Center - formerly known as the Parish Hall - was built in 1928, in the spacious grounds of St Paul’s Churchyard. From the beginning the building was both a resource for the busy parish, and also a center for community activity and outreach. The large auditorium was used for drama and music productions, and there was a facility for movie projections.

The neighborhood - like the city - has changed greatly in the eighty years since the original Hall was conceived. In particular, there is now a standard expectation that large public buildings will be air-conditioned! A program of work, planned and executed over the last few years, has resulted in the transformation of the Parish Hall into the new St Paul’s Center. It now offers more than ten thousand square feet of meeting space, including the Great Hall, the new Gallery, and meeting rooms of various sizes. Also available is the large Dining Hall with its associated newly designed and fitted kitchen. In the newly built administration wing there is an office suite, housing the church staff, as well as a parlor, library and board room.

The Great Hall has had the benefit of international consultants to create an acoustic environment which will be sympathetic for music of all kinds, while still allowing the room to be used for speech and drama productions, and for conference and banqueting use. The most up-to-date lighting and sound equipment has been incorporated, as well as A/C and heating systems which are designed to function without impinging on the sensitive acoustics of the room.

The large new Gallery is ideal for social events and receptions, and it has large French doors overlooking the newly created courtyard garden. It is proposed that the Gallery will be a useful venue for art exhibitions during the annual Rock Creek Festival, and during other parts of the year.

The Center enjoys an unmatched location in the peaceful environment of the churchyard, and an advantage enjoyed by very few major public venues in Washington, DC - almost unlimited free parking!

The newly enlarged and refurbished St Paul’s Center is once again ready to fulfill its important role in the local community, as well as the greater metropolitan area. Council Member Adrian M. Fenty, who represents Ward 4, recently commented
“Ward 4, once again, moves forward with the beautiful renovation of the St Paul’s Center at St Paul’s Episcopal Church. For over 200 years this historic, Colonial-era, spiritual community has given the residents of the District of Columbia a caring home. St Paul’s neighbors benefit from this tradition of community service with a vibrant, new and expanded community resource that will provide space for neighborhood meetings.”
